I’ve been eating gluten-free in the Boston area for more than ten years.

We moved to Boston’s North Shore in 2012 and have relied on the city for nightlife, shows, and weekend outings. Back then the gluten-free scene was small and cross-contact was common, so I cooked at home often. Over the years I’ve watched the city improve dramatically for people with celiac disease.

Today the options are much better—more dedicated kitchens, clearer protocols, and many reliable spots around the city.

While dedicated gluten-free facilities are still growing, Boston now offers many safe and thoughtful options. This guide focuses on restaurants in Boston proper, their protocols, and the gluten-free dishes I trust after dining here for 10+ years.

About This Gluten-Free Boston Dining Guide

This guide highlights places I personally visit and recommend. It does not list every gluten-free friendly restaurant in Boston, but it does include several dedicated gluten-free kitchens and restaurants with clear celiac protocols. I update it regularly when I discover new reliable spots.

Note & disclaimer: Everyone’s experience with celiac disease is different. Dedicated gluten-free facilities are the safest option. For non-dedicated kitchens, always ask about preparation and cross-contact and choose where you feel comfortable eating.

Use this guide to get started, but also research restaurants in advance. There are apps and resources that collect celiac-friendly reviews and can help you see nearby options and current hours. Read recent reviews, and when in doubt call a restaurant to ask directly about protocols for preventing cross-contact.

Capo South Boston’s GF Night

Boston is compact but made up of distinct neighborhoods. The T is convenient, and the city is walkable. When you order, be explicit about what you need: explain you have celiac disease or a severe gluten allergy and describe how food must be prepared to avoid cross-contact. Clear communication helps servers and kitchen staff follow proper protocols.

A restaurant I no longer have listed

I previously included Legal Seafood after many safe visits, but after a 2021 experience and reports from other celiac diners, I removed it from this guide. Individual experiences vary—some celiacs still dine there without issue—so please use your own judgment if considering it.

Grocery Stores For Gluten-Free Food in Boston

For stocking a vacation rental or buying everyday GF staples in Boston, common grocery options include Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Stop & Shop. For budget grocery shopping farther north, Market Basket is a cost-effective choice with a wide selection.
