Best Sheet Cake for Valentine’s Day Recipe
Ingredients
Cake
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter
2/3 cup sour cream
1 cup water
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon almond extract
Frosting
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
4 cups powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 cup whole milk or as needed to reach desired consistency
Valentine’s Day sprinkles for decorating
Supplies
15″ x 10″ baking dish or similar sheet pan
Nonstick baking spray or parchment paper
Mixing bowls
Whisk and spatula
Measuring cups and spoons
Small saucepan
Mixer (hand or stand)
Sifter for powdered sugar (optional)
Wire cooling rack
Instructions
1) Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray a 15″ x 10″ baking pan with nonstick spray or line it with parchment paper.
2) In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt until evenly combined.
3) In a small saucepan, combine the butter and water. Heat until the mixture comes to a boil, then immediately remove from the heat. Pour the hot liquid into the dry ingredients and stir to combine.
4) In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, sour cream, and almond extract until smooth. Stir this wet mixture into the batter until evenly mixed and smooth.
5) Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking pan. Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before frosting.
6) While the cake cools, prepare the buttercream. Beat the room-temperature butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, then mix in the vanilla. Add milk one tablespoon at a time until the frosting reaches the consistency you prefer for spreading or piping.
7) Once the cake has cooled sufficiently, spread the buttercream evenly across the top and decorate with Valentine’s sprinkles. Slice into portions and serve. Store any leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days; bring to room temperature before serving for best texture.
