This homemade Blackened Seasoning is simple to make, sugar-free, gluten-free, and made with only natural spices—unlike many store-bought blends.

It delivers a savory, smoky, slightly spicy flavor that enhances vegetables, meats, poultry, and seafood. The recipe is easy to adjust to your preferred heat and salt levels.

How to Customize the Blackened Seasoning
This blend is written to be moderate in heat, but you can easily adjust it. Ideas:
- Reduce or omit the salt for a low-sodium version.
- Add ½–1 teaspoon more cayenne pepper to increase the spice level.

How to Use Blackened Seasoning
This seasoning is perfect for blackening chicken, fish, or shrimp. For about one pound of protein, a good guideline is 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1½–2 tablespoons of the seasoning.
Basic blackening method (using fish as an example):
- Pat the fish dry.
- Coat lightly with olive oil.
- Rub the seasoning on both sides of the fillets.

- Heat a skillet (cast iron preferred) over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter and wait until the pan is very hot.
- Cook the fillets, flipping only once halfway through.
- Serve with lemon wedges.

Recipes to Try It On
Make a batch of this Blackened Seasoning and try it on a variety of dishes. Use it as a sprinkle, dry rub, or stir it into sauces for added smokiness and spice.
- Blackened Mahi-Mahi Fish Tacos
- One-Pot Creamy Cajun Chicken Pasta (a lighter version)
- Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp stuffed with cheese and jalapeños
