Ingredients:

  • Warm water (about 115°F)
  • Active dry yeast (instant yeast may be used—see notes)
  • Avocado oil (or vegetable oil)
  • Egg (room temperature)
  • Sea salt
  • All-purpose flour
Combine yeast mixture with flour and salt

Instructions:

In a measuring cup, combine the yeast and warm water. Let it sit about 5 minutes until bubbly and activated.

Active Dry vs. Instant Yeast

Can I use instant yeast instead of active dry?

Yes. Add instant yeast directly to the dry ingredients and skip the activation step; you may notice a slightly shorter rise time.

Combine yeast mixture with flour and salt

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. When the yeast mixture is foamy, pour it into the flour and stir to combine.

Add in the egg, and avocado oil.

Add the egg and avocado oil, then mix with a fork until a shaggy dough forms.

Mixer Tip

Can I use a stand mixer?

Yes. A stand mixer with a dough hook speeds the process and is especially helpful if you prefer not to knead by hand.

Place in an oiled bowl, and let rise until doubled in size

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled—about 1 to 2 hours depending on room temperature.

When dough has doubled in size, punch down the dough and turn out into a lightly floured surface.

When doubled, gently punch the dough down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions—use a scale for accuracy or simply eyeball them.

Gently shape the dough into dinner roll balls

Shape each portion into a smooth ball and place them in a lightly oiled or parchment-lined baking pan. Cover with a damp kitchen towel and let rise until puffy and nearly doubled, about 30 to 60 minutes.

Let the roll dough rise for 30 minutes

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes or until the tops are lightly golden. Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter while still warm. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Bake until the tops are lightly golden brown. Brush with butter!

Notes

Recipe Notes:

Water Temperature: Use water around 115°F. Too hot can kill the yeast; too cool may prevent activation.

Measuring Flour: Spoon and level your flour into the measuring cup for accurate results.

Kneading: Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. Under-kneaded dough can yield dense rolls.

Stand Mixer: A stand mixer with a dough hook works well if you prefer not to knead by hand.
