Bloody Mary shots are a fun way to enjoy the classic brunch cocktail in a smaller, concentrated version. A rim of applewood smoked salt adds a smoky, savory layer that elevates each shot.

Thank you, Uncommon Goods, for the beautiful bamboo cabinet of artisanal salt shots — they’re perfect for these Bloody Mary shots!
Bloody Marys are my favorite brunch cocktail. While mimosas are delightful, I prefer the savory, spicy profile of a Bloody Mary — and I love tomatoes, which helps a lot.
One of the best Bloody Marys I’ve had came from a restaurant in Savannah, Georgia. It’s a casual spot known for burgers, but their cocktail game is outstanding.
Why am I so hooked on Bloody Marys?
That legendary version started with a house-made mix loaded with garlic and black pepper, spiked with hot pepper vodka and extra hot sauce. The drink was finished with an over-the-top garnish: a huge celery stalk, pepperoncini, olives, a pearl onion, and a strip of crispy bacon — essentially a mini salad perched on top of the glass.
I loved it so much I skipped the burger I’d ordered and took the salad-and-Bloody Mary combo to go. I may have had two. They even serve it in a tall Pilsner glass, which makes the presentation all the more impressive.

The best part of Bloody Mary Shots?
A salted rim. I always enjoy a salt rim with savory cocktails — it brightens and balances flavors. While many people use table salt, I prefer specialty salts. Kosher salt was my kitchen staple growing up, but artisanal salts are a delightful upgrade: mushroom salt, Himalayan pink, fleur de sel, merlot salt, and my favorite for this drink, smoked salt.
Applewood smoked salt brings a subtle wood-fired aroma that complements smoky bacon and the savory mix in a Bloody Mary. It’s the perfect rim for these shots, delivering that grilled, charred note in a single nibble before each sip.
I keep a small collection of artisanal salts in a bamboo cabinet, which makes it easy to experiment with different rims for cocktails and dishes. The shot-sized containers are both practical and decorative.
Where did I get my salt?
My artisanal salts came in a bamboo cabinet from an online gift shop that curates designer and sustainable home items. The set stores neatly on the counter and looks lovely when not in use.
I plan to share a series of shot recipes rimmed with different artisanal salts over the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for more flavor pairings and ideas.
