You don’t need a boxed mix to make reliably great brownies. Most likely you already have the ingredients in your pantry. My husband Kyle first made this simple from-scratch brownie recipe as a fifth-grade school project, and somehow it became a family favorite. We now call them “Kyle’s Brownies.”

Cocoa Powder Brownies

This recipe uses unsweetened cocoa powder. We often use Hershey’s, but other quality brands such as Guittard, Ghirardelli or Nestlé work well too.

Ingredients to Make Brownies from Scratch

  • 2 sticks of butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

How to Make Brownies from Scratch

Combine all ingredients in one bowl and mix until just incorporated. Pour the batter into a greased or parchment-lined baking pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with a few moist crumbs—avoid overbaking for tender, cake-like brownies.
