February is National Snack Food Month, and for those of us who follow a gluten-free lifestyle, it’s an ideal time to rethink our snack choices.
Snacking often gets a bad rap, but when done sensibly it can support healthy weight management and balanced calorie intake. Thoughtful snacks can curb hunger between meals and help prevent overeating at the next meal. In fact, many people with consistently healthy eating habits snack more frequently than others — perhaps there’s something to learn from their approach.
One of my go-to gluten-free snacks is a simple mix of nuts and dried fruit. We keep a large bowl on the kitchen island with a rotating combination for a quick protein-rich pick-me-up instead of chips. I also enjoy halving an avocado, filling the center with hummus, and eating it with a spoon — simple, satisfying, and naturally gluten free.
Other easy, low-calorie gluten-free options include air-popped popcorn (verify the brand is gluten free), carrot sticks, grape tomatoes, and fresh fruit. Hard-boiled eggs provide a concentrated protein source, and apple or pear slices with peanut butter are a reliable family favorite for afternoon snacking.
When you’re out and about, carrying a gluten-free protein bar in your purse or car can save you from hunger emergencies. I’m always exploring new gluten-free bars that combine smart ingredients with a solid nutritional profile. There are many good options available, but if you rely on bars daily, the classic chocolate-peanut butter pairing can grow tiresome.
That’s why I was pleased to discover Simple Squares organic nut nutrition bars. They’re gluten free, organic, raw, and paleo-friendly, and they pack both protein and fiber for more sustainable energy. What sets them apart are their savory-sweet flavor combinations — Cinna-Clove, Ginger, Coffee, Rosemary, and Sage — unusual but surprisingly delicious profiles for a nutrition bar.
I’m excited to introduce this company to readers and to offer a giveaway featuring a mixed box of their newest flavors, Chili Pep and Cho-Coco. One winner will receive a total of 12 bars.
